Xylitol Gum and Dogs — One Piece Can Be Fatal

This food is NOT safe for dogs. Keep it away from your pet.

Xylitol-containing chewing gum is one of the most dangerous products for dogs. A single piece of gum can contain enough xylitol to cause fatal liver failure in a small dog. The high xylitol concentration in gum makes it particularly deadly.

Warning Signs & Symptoms

Even one piece: rapid fatal hypoglycemia and liver failure possible in small dogs. Two to three pieces: potentially lethal for medium dogs. Multiple pieces: life-threatening for any dog. Onset within 30-60 minutes.

Did you know?

The discovery of xylitol's dental benefits led to its widespread adoption in chewing gum — xylitol actually reduces cavity-causing bacteria in the mouth unlike sugar which feeds them. Finnish researchers in the 1970s demonstrated that regular xylitol gum chewing significantly reduced cavities in children. The same properties that make xylitol beneficial for human dental health are completely separate from its mechanisms of toxicity in dogs — the dog's pancreas releases insulin in response to xylitol in a way that human and cat pancreases do not.

What You Need to Know

Sugar-free chewing gum typically contains 0.2-1.0g of xylitol per piece — the toxic dose for a 10kg dog is approximately 0.1g. This means a single piece of gum can be lethal for small dogs and a few pieces threaten medium and large dogs. Brands commonly containing xylitol include Trident, Orbit, Ice Breakers, and Stride. Never leave gum accessible to dogs.

Breed-Specific Notes

Small dogs face highest risk — potentially lethal from one piece.
