What You Need to Know

Starfruit (carambola) contains soluble calcium oxalates that rapidly damage kidney tubules causing acute kidney injury. This is not the same as the insoluble calcium oxalates in plants like pothos — soluble oxalates are absorbed into the bloodstream and directly damage the kidneys. Dogs with pre-existing kidney disease are particularly vulnerable but healthy dogs can also develop serious kidney injury from starfruit. Never give dogs starfruit in any form.
