What You Need to Know

Salmon Poisoning Disease is a potentially fatal condition in dogs caused by Neorickettsia helminthoeca — a bacteria carried by a fluke parasite found in raw Pacific salmon, trout, and steelhead. It does not affect cats or humans but causes severe vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and death in dogs without treatment. Cooking salmon to safe internal temperature kills the parasite and bacteria completely. Atlantic farmed salmon has lower risk but cooking is still recommended.
