Naan originated in Persia and was introduced to the Indian subcontinent during the Mughal period approximately in the 14th century CE. The word naan simply means bread in Persian. Traditional naan is cooked in a tandoor clay oven at extremely high temperatures — the rapid cooking creates the characteristic charred spots and chewy texture. Restaurant naan typically contains 3-5 times more butter than home-made versions as butter is applied generously after baking.

What You Need to Know

Traditional naan bread is made with flour yogurt butter and often garlic — the garlic content makes most commercially available naan toxic to dogs. Garlic naan contains meaningful amounts of garlic that cause hemolytic anemia with regular exposure. Even plain naan is higher in fat than most breads due to the butter and yogurt in the dough making it a pancreatitis concern. Restaurant naan is almost universally served with garlic butter making shared restaurant naan particularly dangerous.
