Can Dogs Eat Fruit Cake? No — Raisins and Currants Cause Fatal Kidney Failure

This food is NOT safe for dogs. Keep it away from your pet.

Fruit cake is extremely dangerous for dogs. It contains raisins, currants, and sultanas — all of which cause kidney failure in dogs. Even a small amount of fruit cake can cause fatal kidney damage. This is a particular risk at Christmas and holiday time.

Warning Signs & Symptoms

Raisins, currants, and sultanas: kidney failure — potentially fatal even in small amounts. High alcohol content in some traditional recipes: alcohol toxicity. Brandy butter or rum sauce accompaniments: severe alcohol toxicity.

If Your Dog Ate This

If your dog ate, or may have eaten, any fruit cake, call your vet or ASPCA Animal Poison Control (888-426-4435) right away, even if it was only a small piece and your dog seems fine. Fruit cake is usually packed with raisins, sultanas and currants (dried grapes, not blackcurrants). Tell the vet if the cake was soaked in brandy, rum or other alcohol, or contained macadamia nuts, chocolate or a sugar-free sweetener such as xylitol, as these add separate risks. Do not wait for symptoms. Prompt veterinary assessment and treatment can help reduce the risk of kidney injury. Do not try to make your dog vomit unless a veterinarian or animal poison-control expert instructs you to.

What You Need to Know

Fruit cake is one of the most dangerous holiday foods for dogs. Traditional British Christmas cake and similar recipes are packed with dried vine fruits — raisins, currants, and sultanas — all of which cause acute kidney failure in dogs. Even a small cube of fruit cake can contain enough raisins to cause serious kidney damage in a small dog. The risk is amplified at Christmas when fruit cake is often left at accessible heights. This is a genuine emergency.
