Did you know?

Aloe vera has been used medicinally for at least 6000 years — it appears in ancient Egyptian medical texts and was described by Dioscorides in his De Materia Medica in the 1st century CE. Alexander the Great reportedly conquered the island of Socotra in the Indian Ocean specifically to secure its aloe vera supplies to treat his soldiers' wounds. The aloin compound that makes aloe juice toxic when consumed internally is concentrated in the yellow latex layer specifically to deter animals from eating the plant.

What You Need to Know

Aloe vera contains aloin — an anthraquinone compound concentrated in the latex layer just under the skin of the plant and present in varying amounts in juice products. Aloin causes irritation to the gastrointestinal tract causing vomiting and diarrhea and in larger amounts affects the nervous system. Aloe vera juice products marketed for human health contain aloin at levels that cause gastrointestinal toxicity in dogs. Never give dogs aloe vera in any internally consumed form.
