Vanilla extract is toxic to dogs. It contains 35% or more alcohol making it as dangerous as alcoholic beverages. Pure vanilla extract should never be given to dogs. Alcohol-free vanilla flavoring is safer but still not recommended.

What You Need to Know

Pure vanilla extract contains 35% alcohol by legal requirement — the same concentration as many spirits. Even a teaspoon can cause alcohol poisoning in a small dog. The vanilla flavor alone is not toxic but the alcohol content is severely dangerous. Alcohol-free vanilla flavoring exists and is safer but still contains concentrated flavorings not suitable for dogs.
