Can Dogs Eat Sesame Seeds? Yes — Safe in Small Amounts as Food Topper

This food is generally safe for dogs when prepared properly.

Plain sesame seeds are safe for dogs in small amounts. They provide calcium and healthy fats. However they add minimal nutritional benefit compared to other options and should only be given in small amounts as an occasional topper.

Warning Signs & Symptoms

No acute toxicity concerns. Large amounts: digestive upset from high fat and fiber. Sesame oil: much more concentrated — different dosing. Tahini (sesame paste): check for added salt and garlic.

What You Need to Know

Plain sesame seeds are not toxic to dogs and provide small amounts of calcium, iron, and healthy fats. They are so small that dogs rarely seek them out. As an occasional sprinkle on food they are safe. Tahini — sesame paste — is more concentrated and some commercial tahinis contain added salt or garlic making label checking essential. Sesame oil is very concentrated and should be limited to a few drops only.
