Key warning: all red grapes — no grape variety is safe

Can Dogs Eat Red Grapes? No — Same Fatal Toxicity as All Grapes

This food is NOT safe for dogs. Keep it away from your pet.

Red grapes are toxic to dogs in the same way as all grapes — there is no safe variety. Red green purple or black grapes all cause acute kidney failure. Any red grape exposure is always a veterinary emergency regardless of amount.

Warning Signs & Symptoms

Acute kidney failure from any amount. No safe variety exists. Vomiting within hours progressing to kidney failure 24-72 hours after ingestion. Emergency regardless of amount consumed.

If Your Dog Ate This

Call vet or ASPCA Poison Control 888-426-4435 if significant amount consumed.

What to Avoid

all red grapes — no grape variety is safe

Preparation & Serving

Call vet or ASPCA Poison Control 888-426-4435 IMMEDIATELY.

Did you know?

The color of red and purple grapes comes from anthocyanins — the same antioxidant compounds that make blueberries and blackberries healthy for dogs. The irony is that the same anthocyanins are beneficial in blueberries but coexist with the unknown toxic compound in grapes that causes kidney failure. This illustrates why the toxic compound in grapes is not the anthocyanins — since blueberries are safe — but something else unique to grapes that remains unidentified.

What You Need to Know

Red grapes are not more or less toxic than green or purple grapes — the color is irrelevant to toxicity. The unidentified compound causing kidney failure is present in all grape varieties. People sometimes believe certain grape varieties are safe based on anecdote but no variety has been proven safe. All grape color varieties seedless and seeded organic and conventional should be treated identically.
