Can Dogs Eat Raw Bread Dough? No — Expands in Stomach and Produces Alcohol

This food is NOT safe for dogs. Keep it away from your pet.

Raw yeasted dough is extremely dangerous for dogs. It expands in the stomach causing bloat and produces alcohol through fermentation causing ethanol toxicity simultaneously. Both effects can be fatal.

Warning Signs & Symptoms

Expanding dough: bloat and gastric dilation, severe abdominal pain, respiratory distress. Ethanol from fermentation: disorientation, vomiting, collapse, respiratory depression, coma, death.

If Your Dog Ate This

Call vet or ASPCA Poison Control 888-426-4435 immediately. Do not induce vomiting. This requires emergency veterinary intervention.

What to Avoid

all raw yeasted dough — pizza dough, bread dough, rolls, any raw yeast dough

Preparation & Serving

Call vet or emergency animal hospital IMMEDIATELY. Do not induce vomiting — expanding dough makes this dangerous. Surgery may be required.

What You Need to Know

Raw bread dough containing active yeast is one of the most dangerous foods dogs can ingest. The warm moist environment of the stomach is ideal for yeast — the dough continues rising and expanding causing severe gastric distension. Simultaneously the yeast ferments sugars producing ethanol that is rapidly absorbed causing alcohol toxicity. Both processes can occur simultaneously creating a life-threatening emergency requiring immediate veterinary surgery.
