Can Dogs Eat Raw Salmon? No — Salmon Poisoning Disease Can Be Fatal
This food is NOT safe for dogs. Keep it away from your pet.

Did you know?
Salmon poisoning disease was first described in veterinary literature in 1925 when Pacific Northwest veterinarians noticed dogs dying after eating raw salmon from local streams. The causative agent was not identified until 1954 when researchers discovered the trematode fluke Nanophyetus salmincola and its bacterial passenger Neorickettsia helminthoeca. The bacteria is uniquely dangerous to dogs — cats wolves and bears can eat raw salmon without developing the disease.

What You Need to Know
Salmon poisoning disease is caused by Neorickettsia helminthoeca bacteria carried by a fluke parasite in raw salmon. Unlike most food-borne bacteria this one causes a distinctive illness with delayed onset. Dogs in the Pacific Northwest are most at risk but raw salmon from anywhere can carry bacteria and parasites. Always cook salmon to an internal temperature of 145°F. This rule applies regardless of salmon quality or source.
Breed-Specific Notes
Pacific Northwest dogs at highest risk.
