Can Dogs Eat Pumpkin? Yes — One of the Best Foods for Digestive Health

This food is generally safe for dogs when prepared properly.

Plain pumpkin is one of the most beneficial foods for dogs. Highly digestible soluble fiber helps both diarrhea and constipation. Used as a digestive aid by vets. Plain canned pumpkin without pie filling or additives is the most convenient form.

Warning Signs & Symptoms

Pumpkin pie filling: high sugar and spices — never appropriate. Pumpkin with added salt or sweetener: harmful. Large amounts: loose stools from very high fiber. Seeds: safe but calorie-dense — give separately.

Did you know?

The world's heaviest pumpkin weighed 2749 pounds (1247 kg) and was grown in Belgium in 2021. Competitive giant pumpkin growing is a serious sport with dedicated varieties bred specifically for size rather than flavor. These competition pumpkins cannot be eaten as they are essentially all water and fiber with minimal flavor. The small sugar pumpkins and pie pumpkins used for cooking — and for dogs — are completely different varieties bred for dense flavorful flesh.

What You Need to Know

Pumpkin is one of the few foods that helps both diarrhea and constipation — the soluble fiber absorbs excess water in loose stools while adding bulk to relieve constipation. One to four teaspoons per meal based on dog size is the standard recommendation. Plain canned pumpkin is convenient — Libby's 100% pure pumpkin is the standard recommendation. Always check the label — pumpkin pie filling contains cinnamon nutmeg and sugar.
