Can Dogs Eat Mayonnaise? No — Almost Pure Fat Causes Pancreatitis

This food is NOT safe for dogs. Keep it away from your pet.

Mayonnaise is not safe for dogs. It is almost entirely fat from oil and egg yolks with high sodium. Even a tablespoon contains significant fat that can trigger pancreatitis. Regular exposure causes weight gain and digestive problems.

Warning Signs & Symptoms

Very high fat: pancreatitis risk. High sodium: digestive upset. Calorie-dense: obesity with regular access. Garlic in some varieties: hemolytic anemia. Large amounts: acute pancreatitis.

If Your Dog Ate This

Call vet or ASPCA Poison Control 888-426-4435 if significant amount consumed.

What to Avoid

all mayonnaise — plain and flavored varieties

Preparation & Serving

Monitor for digestive upset. Call vet if large amount or pancreatitis-prone dog consumed.

Did you know?

Mayonnaise was invented in the 18th century — possibly in Mahon Minorca (hence the name) or possibly in France. The French claim is that the chef of the Duke de Richelieu created it in 1756. The emulsification chemistry that holds mayonnaise together — lecithin from egg yolks dispersing oil droplets in water — was not understood scientifically until the 20th century though cooks had successfully made mayo for centuries. Commercial mayonnaise production began in the early 20th century. The fat content that makes mayo so dangerous for dogs is the same fat content that gives it its rich creamy texture.

What You Need to Know

Mayonnaise is an emulsion of oil and egg yolk — approximately 75% fat by weight. The fat content alone makes it harmful for dogs. Flavored mayonnaises (garlic aioli chipotle mayo) add additional toxic ingredients. Even plain mayo in significant amounts triggers digestive upset and pancreatitis. Never give dogs mayonnaise as a treat or add it to dog food.
