Can Dogs Eat Homemade Mayonnaise? No — Same Fat Risk as Commercial Mayo Plus Raw Egg

This food is NOT safe for dogs. Keep it away from your pet.

Homemade mayonnaise is equally unsafe as commercial mayonnaise — it is still nearly pure fat from oil and egg yolk. Raw egg yolk in homemade mayo also carries Salmonella risk. No mayo whether homemade or commercial is appropriate for dogs.

Warning Signs & Symptoms

Pure fat from oil: pancreatitis risk same as commercial mayo. Raw egg: Salmonella risk. High caloric density: obesity. Lemon juice in recipe: citric acid irritation.

Did you know?

The food safety concern about homemade mayonnaise — Salmonella from raw eggs — led to the development of pasteurized eggs specifically for home use. The acidic environment created by lemon juice or vinegar in mayonnaise actually inhibits bacterial growth making fresh homemade mayo safer than it might seem if made correctly. The real food safety issue with homemade mayo is not the raw egg but inadequate acidity or cross-contamination. For dogs the raw egg and high fat are both concerns but the fat content is the primary danger.

What You Need to Know

Homemade mayonnaise made with oil egg yolk lemon juice and mustard is nutritionally equivalent to commercial mayonnaise from a dog safety perspective — both are very high in fat. The raw egg component adds Salmonella risk. Making it at home does not make it safer for dogs. Plain cooked egg without the oil would be a safe alternative to share.
