Grapefruit is a relatively young fruit — it was first described in Barbados in 1750 and is a natural hybrid of pomelo and sweet orange that occurred spontaneously in the Caribbean. The name comes from the way the fruit grows in clusters resembling grapes. The grapefruit's interaction with medications — blocking cytochrome P450 enzymes that metabolize many drugs — was discovered accidentally in the 1980s when researchers used grapefruit juice to mask the taste of alcohol in a drug study. The same enzyme interference affects dogs differently than humans.

The psoralen compounds cause photosensitization — dogs become sensitive to sunlight causing skin reactions.
