What You Need to Know

Caffeine is toxic to dogs and cats because they metabolize it far more slowly than humans allowing it to accumulate to toxic levels. The toxic dose for dogs is approximately 140mg of caffeine per kg of body weight but symptoms appear at much lower doses. A cup of coffee contains approximately 95-200mg of caffeine. Coffee grounds are particularly dangerous — dogs accessing kitchen compost bins with coffee grounds are a common emergency presentation. All forms of coffee including decaf must be kept completely inaccessible.
