Did you know?

Bacon as we know it — cured smoked pork belly — has been produced in China for approximately 1500 years where it was called wulhua rou. Western bacon curing traditions developed independently in Europe where salt-cured pork was essential for winter food preservation before refrigeration. The distinctive flavor of bacon comes from the Maillard reaction during cooking combined with smoke compounds from the curing process. Approximately 18 pounds of bacon are consumed per American per year making it one of the most culturally significant meat products — and one of the most dangerous table scraps for dogs.

What You Need to Know

Bacon is one of the most dangerous table scraps for dogs due to the combination of extreme sodium (one strip contains approximately 190mg sodium) and very high fat content. Both compounds are independently harmful — combined they make bacon particularly dangerous. Turkey bacon is not a safe alternative — still too high in sodium and fat. Never give dogs bacon as a treat.

Breed-Specific Notes

Pancreatitis-prone breeds can develop acute pancreatitis from a single strip.
