Did you know?

Catfish get their name from their whisker-like barbels — sensory organs around the mouth that detect chemicals in the water. Catfish have taste receptors distributed across their entire body surface — a 15-inch catfish has approximately 250000 taste buds covering its skin. This makes catfish extraordinarily sensitive to chemicals in water which explains why they are attracted to strong-smelling baits. The species diversity of catfish is extraordinary — there are approximately 3000 species comprising about 10% of all fish species on Earth.

What You Need to Know

Catfish is a readily available affordable freshwater fish safe for dogs when cooked plainly. It does not provide the omega-3 richness of cold-water fish like salmon but offers excellent lean protein. Battered and fried catfish — common in Southern US cooking — is not appropriate due to extreme fat and seasonings. Plain baked or steamed catfish without seasonings is the appropriate form.
