Did you know?

Nori cultivation in Japan dates back to the Edo period when coastal communities noticed that seaweed grew on the bamboo poles used to mark fishing areas. Japanese farmers began deliberately cultivating nori on bamboo frames in Tokyo Bay in the 17th century. Modern nori is grown on nets suspended in shallow coastal waters harvested multiple times per year. Each sheet of nori requires approximately 7 gallons of water during processing.

What You Need to Know

Plain unseasoned nori — the seaweed used to wrap sushi — is safe in small amounts. It provides iodine vitamins and minerals. However virtually all commercial nori products sold as snacks are seasoned with salt soy sauce sesame oil or other flavorings. Plain nori sheets for sushi preparation without any seasoning are the appropriate type. Small amounts only due to iodine concentration.
